Important Vocabulary For Teaching Exam

Example: A massive rejig of the Union Council of Ministers on Sunday saw Nirmala Sitharman being appointed the Defence Minister of India, the first woman to hold the charge full time (late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had held additional charge of Defence twice during her premiership).
1. Premier [pri-meer, -myeer, pree-meer]
Noun: the head of the cabinet; first minister; prime minister; a chief officer.
Adjective: first in rank; chief; leading; first in time; earliest; oldest.
Related forms: premiership, noun.
Example: Thus, Nitin Gadkari has been given charge of Water Resources and the flagship Namami Gange programme.

2. Flagship [flag-ship]
Noun: a ship carrying the flag officer or the commander of a fleet, squadron, or the like, and displaying the officer’s flag; the main vessel of a shipping company; any of the best or largest ships or airplanes operated by a passenger line.
Adjective: being or constituting a flagship.
Synonyms: bellwether, crown jewel, chief, forerunner, head, flotilla leader, front runner, lead ship, mother ship.
Example: Pyongyang residents threw their arms aloft in triumph as a television newsreader hailed the “unprecedentedly large” blast.

3. Aloft [uh-lawft, uh-loft]
Adverb: high up; far above the ground; in or into the air.
Preposition: on or at the top of.
Synonyms: above, over, overhead, up.
Antonyms: below, under.

4. Triumph [trahy-uh mf, -uhmf]
Noun: the act, fact, or condition of being victorious or triumphant; victory; conquest; a significant success or noteworthy achievement; instance or occasion of victory.
Verb: to gain a victory; be victorious; win; to gain mastery; prevail.
Synonyms: celebration, joy, pride, elation, exultation, festivity, jubilance, jubilation, jubilee, merriment, rejoicing, reveling, exultance.
Antonyms: disaster, failure, forfeit, loss.

5. Hail [heyl]
Verb: to cheer, salute, or greet; welcome; to acclaim; approve enthusiastically; to call out to in order to stop, attract attention, ask aid, etc; to call out in order to greet, attract attention, etc..
Noun: a shout or call to attract attention; a salutation or greeting.
Synonyms: barrage, bombardment, hailstorm, rain, salvo, shower, storm, volley, broadside, cannonade, pelting.
Example: China rebuked its ally and began emergency monitoring for radiation at its border with the North.

6. Rebuke [ri-byook]
Verb: to express sharp, stern disapproval of; reprove; reprimand.
Noun: sharp, stern disapproval; reproof; reprimand.
Synonyms: admonition, censure, condemnation, disapproval, punishment, rebuff, reproach, snub, admonishment, affliction, berating, blame, castigation, chiding, comeuppance, correction, earful, expostulation, going-over, lecture, lesson, objurgation.
Antonyms: approval, encouragement, endorsement, exoneration.
Example: Hours before the test, the North released images of leader Kim Jong-un at the Nuclear Weapons Institute, inspecting what it said was a miniaturised H-bomb that could be fitted onto an intercontinental ballistic missile.
7. Ballistic [buh-lis-tik]
Adjective: of or relating to ballistics; having its motion determined or describable by the laws of exterior ballistics.
Example: U.S. monitors measured a 6.3-magnitude tremor near the North’s main testing site.
8. Tremor [trem-er, tree-mer]
Noun: involuntary shaking of the body or limbs, as from disease, fear, weakness, or excitement; a fit of trembling; any tremulous or vibratory movement; vibration; a trembling or quivering effect, as of light.
Synonyms: earthquake, shiver, upheaval, vibration, agitation, flutter, quake, quaking, quaver, quiver, quivering, ripple, shake, shivering.
Antonyms: stillness.
Example: Those in good condition will be distributed directly, and the rest, refurbished.
9. Refurbish [ree-fur-bish]
Verb: to furbish again; renovate; brighten.
Synonyms: fix up, modernize, overhaul, recondition, redo, refit, rehabilitate, remodel, renovate, repair, restore, revamp, update, mend, refresh.
Antonyms: antique, break, damage, destroy.
Example: The growth in GDP can be traced to the growth and vigor of each of these components.
10. Vigor [vig-er]
Noun: active strength or force; healthy physical or mental energy or power; vitality; energetic activity; energy; intensity; force of healthy growth in any living matter or organism, as a plant; active or effective force, especially legal validity.
Synonyms: ability, agility, alertness, capability, dynamism, endurance, intensity, potency, quickness, strength, urgency, vitality, action, activity, bang.
Antonyms: apathy, clumsiness, impotence, inability.
