Teaching is a noble profession, that gives the power to share your knowledge with the future of the nation. In order to become a teacher, one needs to pass the basic eligibility criteria as prescribed by the government. In India, lots of exams are conducted for the selection of the teachers on school level, state level and university level. Here, we are going to discuss the entrance exams for the selection process of teachers and the eligibility criteria for all the teaching exams in this post.
Lists of Teaching Exams in India are as follows
● CTET – Central Teacher Eligibility Test
● State TETs – State Teacher Eligibility Test (for each state)
● NET – National Eligibility Test(For Assistant professor & Junior Research Fellowship)
● PRT,TGT and PGT(For 1st to 12th class)
Let’s discuss in detail about the teaching exams and the eligibility required to be fulfilled for all these exams:
CTET – Central Eligibility Test
CBSE conducts the CTET exam for the selection of teachers to teach in the schools of the central/state Government in India. CTET Paper 1 and Paper 2 exam are qualifying exams for the selection of primary and secondary level teaching post.
Eligibility for CTET
Paper 1 is conducted for becoming a teacher of classes I to V while Paper II is for becoming a teacher of classes VI to VIII. A person who intends to be a teacher for both levels (classes I to VIII) needs to appear in both the papers. 60% or more marks in the exam will be considered as CTET Pass. Candidates scoring 60% or more marks in the exam is considered as TET pass.
To be eligible to appear in CTET Paper 1 Exam, candidates must be senior secondary passed with at least 50% marks along with 2 yr diploma in elementary education. For CTET Paper 2, candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree along with B.Ed.
For Better Preparation:
State Teacher Eligibility Test: On the lines of CTET, the state conducts TETs for the selection of teachers for state government schools. To be eligible for State TETs, a candidate must follow the guidelines as per the norms laid down by NCTE. Eligibility for one state TET may differ from the other State TET. However, a state government can also consider the CTET if it decides not to conduct the State TET.
National Eligibility Test – NET
UGC NET Exam is conducted by NTA (National Testing Agency) to select the Assistant Professor or Junior Research Fellowship for both in Indian Universities and Colleges.
Eligibility for UGC NET
● Candidate must possess Master’s Degree with a minimum of 55% marks (50% for reserved candidates)
● Students in the final year of a master’s program or waiting for its result can also apply for UGC Exam.
● Ph.D. degree holders who have completed their master’s degree before mentioned date are given relaxation of 5% in aggregate marks.
● Applicants must not be more than 30 years of age as on June 1, 2020 to apply for Junior Research Fellowship.
● SC, ST, OBC, PWD, Transgender and Women candidates are given an age relaxation of upto 5 years.
Above mentioned examination CTET, STET & UGC NET examinations are the base of the appointment of a candidate as a Primary(PRT), Upper Primary level teacher (TGT & PGT) and lectureship. Some Govt. authorized bodies that conduct recruitment examinations for teaching personnel are:
- Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS)
- Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS)
- Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board (DSSSB)
PRT, TGT and PGT
PRT, TGT and PGT are the teaching jobs in govt. sector or in private schools. There are three levels of teaching jobs namely PRT, TGT, & PGT. PRT teachers can teach up to 1st to 5th level, TGT teachers can teach up to 10th level, & PGT can teach up to 12th level. The eligibility for all the three levels is different such as:
PRT Eligibility Criteria
Aspirants who want to become a teacher for primary classes i.e. 1st to 5th standard, appears for PRT post. For PRT, after 12th, student will opt JBT/BTC/B.EL.Ed/D.ED/B.Ed etc. and after that, you have to qualify CTET/STET Paper I.
TGT Eligibility Criteria
Candidate must be graduate with a B.Ed degree from any recognised university. Minimum Age requirement for TGT is 21 years while there is no cap for maximum age required.
PGT Post Graduate Teacher
PGT (Post Graduate Teacher): ‘PGT ‘as the name says for only Post Graduate (Master Degree) holder is eligible for PGT Posts. But you have to do B.Ed. after this to eligible for PGT posts.
