Coronavirus (COVID-19) Facts, Symptoms and Precautions

An Epidemic- Coronavirus (COVID-19)

The outbreak of the coronavirus has sent panic waves across the globe. Initially, not many countries were aware of the speed at which it could spread and affect human lives massively. The disease seems to have originated from Wuhan in China and has now spread worldwide, infecting millions of people.  A lot of people have lost their lives because they got exposed to this virus. Which spreads through droplets presumably through sneezes, cough, nasal discharge, etc. According to the latest report the total number of confirmed cases globally is 9 72 303 and total death report surged to 50 322

In India the total number of confirmed cases surged to 3200 including cured/discharged/migrated and those dead after tallying up. As per the latest data, the death toll due to COVID-19 is 72 in India and 193 people have been cured/discharged.

What is Corona-virus & Its Symptoms

Several people do not know that the virus can remain dormant outside a living organism for several days, and after finding a host starts to multiply. The symptoms of corona are similar to the cold and sore throat, which progresses to the symptoms of influenza. The extremity of the symptoms caused by the virus increases over time, and the patient finds difficulty in breathing.

The main reason the patient finds difficulty in breathing is due to the fibrosis happening in the lungs because of the infection spread. Corona virus patients would start showing signs within two weeks of exposure to the COVID-19.

Who Are At Risk ?

People with existing medical conditions and chronic ailments (such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease) appear to be vulnerable to becoming severely ill with this virus. Older people are at a higher risk of catching the virus. People had traveled to regions where there has been an outbreak of the corona virus or exposed to infected persons.

Many people often neglect the symptoms which are

  • runny nose and sore throat
  • cough and fever

but as the infection progresses, the patient will have

  • shortness of breath
  • fatigue and body ache

Corona virus infection is closely related to other respiratory diseases such as influenza, SARS, MERS, etc. as they are related to each other genetically, but the diseases they cause are quite different. The status of the patient can get complicated. They may then acquire pneumonia in both their lungs, failure of several organs, and this could lead to the death of the patient.

Finding a cure…

At present, there is no cure for corona virus infection, and doctors are still trying out a cocktail of medications to fight the disease.  Among those are the HIV antiviral drugs that have proved to be useful. The cold medicines get usually prescribed for the initial symptoms. Those infected have to exercise precautions from not spreading to others in their vicinity and practicing self- quarantining.

  • Infected patients need to get enough rest and avoid exertion.
  • Drink sufficient fluids and keep the body hydrated at all times.
  • Avoid areas which smokey or where there is air pollution
  • For fever and body pain acetaminophen
  • The humidifier needs to be cleaned, or the use of a cool-mist vaporizer will help patients who suffer from congestion.

Scientists are trying hard to get a cure, as well as a vaccine to prevent others from getting infected. But the spread of the corona virus has overwhelmed the health authorities. And resources aren’t sufficient to tend to the vast numbers which are getting affected daily in many parts of the globe.

Basic Protective Measures

Wash your hands frequently: Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water.

Maintain social distancing: Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.

Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth: Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.

Practice respiratory hygiene: Covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately.

Stay informed and follow advice given by your healthcare provider: Stay informed on the latest developments about COVID-19. Follow advice given by your healthcare provider, your national and local public health authority or your employer on how to protect yourself and others from COVID-19.

Conclusion

The only way to curb the spread further is to practice social distancing until the corona virus scales down. The stages of the virus are peaking in most countries, which is alarmingly fast. To prevent further damage to human lives, people should practice hygiene and not panic as well.
